It is a huge sigh of relief that is being breathed from the Stags supporters
this week, following Carlton Palmers decision to resign. Following two
earlier threats to quit, I'm only very thankful that this time he actually
meant it. Had he stayed much longer, the damage and position we would have
found ourselves could have been too late to reverse, as it is, a new man at
least has time to build team morale and get the side back up the league two
table.
Fans who had stayed away in their droves because of Carlton, will hopefully
now return and help the club storm back up the League 2 table, although some
fans are still questioning the motives of the chairman who alledegly keeps topping up his "Directors Loan" from income that should be going into the club, and for this, some still refuse to come back.
Things that went against Carlton, and helped turn the fans on his back, was
an obsession with publicly humiliating players following defeats, and
getting rid of anyone who he hadn't signed himself, and also saying how the
team only looked good whilst he was playing, this at the tender age of 39!
Further internet surfing proved this was also the case whilst he was going
out and getting Stockport relegated, although Carlton didn't like us to talk
about that chapter in his life.
Fans were however impressed with some of this summers signings, although
they were later baffled by the decision to play strikers out wide, and
insist on a 4-3-3 formation, even though we all knew this meant 4-5-1, you
can fool many people, but not football supporters.
It was tactically and probably the way Carlton conducted his handling of ex
players that cost him the job, it certainly could not continue, now the task
of any new man in the job is to get the team playing again. Personally I
stayed away for a while whilst Carlton was here, and now at the very least I
will welcome with open arms, any manager coming into Field Mill, knowing at
the very least, he won't be as bad as the last one.
