STAGS LINKED WITH WEAVER

Mansfield have been linked with a move for their former goalkeeper Nicky Weaver.

Weaver, 27, is at Manchester City, but Stuart Pearce has yet to pick him for the first team this season.

He has been out on loan to hometown club Sheffield Wednesday, making 14 appearances while deputising for the injured David Lucas.

But Stags boss Peter Shirtliff refused to comment on reports that Weaver might be heading back to Field Mill.

Former Sheffield Wednesday man Kevin Pressman has been Mansfield's regular keeper, with Jason White coming in when he has been unavailable.

But their futures are still to be decided, with the contracts of both running out this summer.

Weaver came through the ranks at the Stags and made just one first team appearance - a 2-0 win at Cambridge United in 1995-1996.

He was then spotted by the Blues and moved north in 1997 after Mansfield accepted an undisclosed bid - believed to be around £200,000 - for his services.

He has made 148 league starts for City and played a starring role in helping the club back into the Premiership with successive promotions in 1998-1999 and 2000-2001.

But Weaver's career has been blighted by injury and he is now one of four keepers vying for the first team goalkeeper's jersey at City.
