Darlington boss Dave Penny, speaking to the media after the game said "We don't want to use illness as an excuse, but we were without 14 players and three of those out there shouldn't really have played.
"On Saturday two players were unwell and since then it has spread throughout the club. We had a word with the league to try and get the game called off, but they told us we had to play.
"It's frustrating for the supporters when they see a display like that, but I'm not going to have a go at any of the players, because a lot of them shouldn't have played.
"We had players throwing up before the game and again at half-time. The transfer window scenario has killed us, but hopefully I can get some fit bodies ready for the weekend as the doctor has been in and given antibiotics to all those affected."
