The FA Cup Second Round,
Player of the Round nominations
Matt Redmile - Tamworth
Alan Julian - Stevenage Borough
Ryan Lowe - Chester City
Richie Barker - Mansfield Town
Dave Mulligan - Doncaster Rovers
Five players who starred in a series of pulsating FA Cup ties over the weekend have been nominated for The FA’s Player of the Round award, run in partnership with UMBRO.
The names in the frame include Tamworth defender Matt Redmile whose towering second half header put the Nationwide Conference strugglers 2–1 ahead in the giant-killing victory.
The victory over League One side Hartlepool United, earned the Lambs their first ever place in The FA Cup third round, away to Championship side Stoke City.
Stiff competition is provided by Stevenage Borough ‘keeper Alan Julian who made a string of superb saves either side of the break to earn a 2–2 draw with Northampton Town.
Chester City marksman Ryan Lowe who scored twice in the 3–0 win over twice European Cup winners, Nottingham Forest, and Mansfield Town’s Richie Barker who starred in the 3–0 win over Nationwide Conference high flyers Gray’s Athletic are also nominated.
Doncaster Rovers’ Dave Mulligan, who scored two blistering free kicks in the 2–1 away win at Boston, completes the formidable lineup.
Torquay United’s on-loan defender, Adam Lockwood, who set up one goal and was in commanding form in the 2–1 win over Notts County narrowly missed out on a nomination
He does receives an honourable mention as the 92nd team in The Football League earned themselves a Third Round home tie against Premier League side Birmingham City.
The player with the most votes will become the sixth FA Cup ‘Player of the Round’ this season and will win £1000 worth of UMBRO football kit for a local school, club or organisation. He will also receive an engraved silver salver.
Players were nominated by a team of panellists including Radio 5 Live’s Mark Clemmit, The Daily Telegraph’s Ricky George, Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday anchorman Jeff Stelling, David Watters, news editor of The Non League Paper, in conjunction with FA personnel attending FA Cup matches.
The winning player will automatically join The FA’s Team of The FA Cup, guaranteeing VIP attendance at the 125th FA Cup final at the new Wembley stadium, on May 13 2006.
The Team of The FA Cup comprises Player of the Round winners from the First Qualifying Round to the Semi Final. Players already in the team are Gosport Borough’s Jamie Laidlaw, Northwich Victoria’s Paul Brayson (who has won the award twice), Leamington’s Alex Rodman and Eastbourne Borough’s Stuart Tuck.
In the last two years several Premiership players have featured in the team alongside non-league players, including Jose Antonio Reyes, Freddie Ljungberg, Shay Given and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Speaking about Richie's nomination, Sir Trevor Brooking said "Richie thoroughly deserves to be nominated for The FA Cup Player of the Round award after scoring twice in a well deserved win against a club that has only lost once in the Conference this season."
