The Stags head into the game on the back of a 2-0 reverse at Bristol Rovers while Oxford beat Peterborough 1-0 last time out.
And Shirtliff said: "I'm focusing on one game at a time and the ultimate goal is to win as many games and finish as high up the table as possible.
"Whether we simply remain safe from relegation or reach the play-offs is not the issue.
"I'm looking forward to playing Oxford at the weekend because they've got a new manager in Jim Smith who's got bags of enthusiasm and experience.
"And they'll be coming here on the back of a good win so it'll be a tough game for us."
