Following Carlton Palmer's decision to step down following the 2-0 defeat to Rochdale, the search for a new manager starts now, with Peter Shirtliff, Palmer's assistant, expected to be handed the reigns for the time being.
Palmer was fed up of the abuse he was receiving and singled that out as he made a brief statement outlining he was leaving the post as Stags Manager, "The chairman has been a friend of mine for 15 years and I think it is only fair I go now.
"So I have decided to resign and I have wished the players all the best. They are a good group of young players.
"I have achieved a lot in my career and I am not going to stand here taking that sort of abuse from the supporters. So I have told Peter Shirtliff to go in and see the chairman on Monday.
"I am going to go away on holiday now and leave this behind me for the moment. But I want to thank all the fans who did stick with me and hope things improve."
With the Stags lacking confidence and falling to the bottom reaches of the division (something which Palmer fails to mention in his statement!), any man taking on the role, faces a massive task to lift team morale, and get the Stags back up the League Two Table.
Keith Haslam is expected to make a statement on Monday about the situation, and we are all hoping and praying that a Mr C Palmer is not sat at the side of him when he makes it !
